Franchise

Film franchises are collections of related films, often characterised by shared characters, settings, and themes. For example 'Harry Potter'.

Distributor

the company that markets and organises the distribution of a film

Hollywood Major

 Large film productions that dominates Hollywood.  For example Universal Pictures

Teaser 

a short, edited promotional video to generate interest in an upcoming film and announce its release date.

Montage 

 the technique of selecting, editing, and piecing together separate sections of film to form a continuous whole.

Ensemble cast 

 a group pf actors who has more or less equal roles in a production : there is not always a main protagonist.

Tentpole Film

 a very high-budget film that they expect is going to be very successful in order to support smaller, riskier products. For example 'Shrek' or 'Die hard'

High-concept

emphasis on striking but easily communicable central idea, designed to have wide audience appeal.

Enigma 

a question that encourage the audience to watch/read on to find the answer to.

  • Writer & Inspiration - Ian Fleming, likely drew inspiration from more than one secret agent he learned of from his experience working with British naval intelligence. Potential real-life inspirations for Bond included World War II secret agent F.F.E.

Distribution and Marketing

Lo : To explore the process of film making

  • Distribution is the process of making copies.
  • Sometimes producers will show their films at festival in order to persuade distribution companies to take on their films.
  • Sometimes a conglomerate will delegate the distribution to a smaller company that they own (vertical integration).
  • Distributers need to work out and stick to budgets.
  • They need to also consider tactical release dates and theatrical widows very carefully.
The UK and USA distributors of No Time To Die were Universal Pictures and United Artists Releasing. 
They are part of a conglomerate 
The release date for the cinemas was 30th September 2021, and was available for download on 9th November 2021, but was later put on DVD on 20th December in the UK and 21st December for US.

How movies can be marketed and distributed

Teaser trailer worked well using action and intense scenes to make people want to watch it.
Heineken - made an ad for their beer and used Daniel Craig to promote the movie and their beer at the same time. Had an action and also a humorous way of promoting it, this was done by someone spotting him and identifying him as James Bond. This then made the ad into an action by him losing his passport and him having to sneak and go find it. 
The soundtrack 'No Time To Die' by Billie Eilish on Interscope (owned by universal) - 'star appeal'.

How do you watch film? : DVD, streaming platforms (like Disney+ and Netflix) and the cinema.

The media keeps the audience informed with current events.
People can acquire information, knowledge, and understand through media products.

Entertainment
Use of media to escape the humdrum of their boring every day lives.
Access media forms to forget about worries and troubles for a while.
To give a sense of. happiness and release from the daily 'grind' (work, school, obligations).


Social Interaction.
The ability of media products to produce a topic of conversation between other people.
Media products allows the audience to break down barriers of time/ distance to communicate with others.


How does the uses and gratifications theory category of information apply to news?

The theory of uses and gratification identified as Information appeal to the audience as it allows the audience to gain an insight into other peoples lives. We can see this in News as through news you find out information and knowledge easily as the news is broadcasted and shown in many media forms. This shows that the theory of information in U&G applies to news because people can acquire knowledge and information through the news.

Entertainment - Action packed, gun fighting scenes - audience finds it entertaining, escapism.

Explain how the audience would find 'entertainment' from the trailer.

The audience would find 'entertainment' from the trailer due to the action packed narrative. For example, through the fighting scenes people may find escapism and entertainment. Therefore, make the audience interact more and get more excited about the film. 

Explain which 'Gratifications' the audience would experience from watching the NTTD trailer?

The theory of uses and Gratification identified social interaction as appeal to the audience because it allows them to communicate with people about their interests and develop friendships. We can see this in the NTTD trailer as it was posted on YouTube. This means people can comment and share the trailer in between people, allowing them to interact. This shows that the theory of social interaction in U&G applies to the NTTD trailer because people can communicate about the trailer and their theories for the film.

The theory of uses and Gratification identified entertainment as appeal to the audience because it allows a sense of escapism to the audience. We can see this in NTTD trailer as it was packed with gun scenes, fighting scenes and action. This means people can watch action that wouldn't happen in reality allowing entertainment in the escapism. This shows that the theory of entertainment in U&G applies to the NTTD trailer because people can escape from their normal lives and get excited for the action packed narrative.

Film Industry Audience Expectations
Lo : to consolidate our knowledge of the film industry.

things you would expect to see on film franchise website - The actors, Products/merchandise, the trailer, link to a store, links to social media platforms, interviews and behind the scenes.

Having actors from previous films is appealing because it makes the characters more relatable and the story line seem more real - the fans might have a personal connection with the characters. 

Why might Phoebe Waller Bridge's involvement encourage different audiences to watch the film? Because it made it slightly more gender equal and made more women watch the Bond franchise, even though it was male dominated.

How do Bond conventions appeal to the audience?
The opening action scene appealed to the audience by using guns, explosives and fighting scenes to make it appealing and entertaining straight at the start of the movie to make the audience want to watch. They had stunt doubles to use the motorcycles and drive the iconic bond car, which made it look even more action packed.

A media conglomerate is a company that owns other companies. In film, this could be a company that has/owns production and distribution such as Disney or Warner Bros.

Convergence is the access of media on different platforms or the merging of two or more media. We can see this in the film industry through streaming films to phone,Tv or Laptop. 

3d) Explain how films use technologies to reach audiences and promote the film. Refer to NTTD to support your points (12 marks)

Technology is used in films to appeal to the audience because it allows variety in promotion methods therefore enlarging their audience. We can see this in NTTD through the trailer. The trailer was posted on YouTube and NTTD's website which allows loads of people to access it. This shows that the technology helps to appeal to the audience and promote the film because people from around the world can see the film which makes them gain a larger audience.

Two ways in which media producers categorise audiences would be Gender and Age. 

4b) Briefly explain how NTTD targets audiences. (4 marks) 
through action, relatable/varied characters, music and songs, rating (12A)

NTTD targets audience through the action packed narrative and the James Bond conventions. An example of this would be the opening scene which was full of fights, and gun scenes. There was also a car chase and a motorcycle jump. This targets audience as its entertaining to the audience. 

4c) Explain why users visit the NTTD/007 website. Refer to the Uses and Gratifications theory in your answer. 

The theory of uses and gratifications identified Personal identity as appealing to the audience because of the relatable and varied characters. We can see this in the website by relating to the characters and having variety to talk about with friends and family. This shows that the theory of personal identity in U&G applies to the website as people can talk about the characters and their favourite scenes/costumes.
